It was a dream debut for three of our Student Athletes as Cape Breton University eased to a season opening victory in defence of their AUS (Atlantic University Sport) championship.

On Saturday night SF USA’s David Binnie, and no doubt quite a few other’s in the new CBU Caper’s Scottish Fan Club, tuned into the live feed of the match against Saint Mary’s University with it being beamed online from Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island.

The long distance viewer’s were in for a treat and CBU served up a great performance to start their campaign in style with a comfortable 2-0 victory over their Halifax based opponents.

It’s been almost a year in the planning, and we were all looking forward to seeing our latest Scottish recruits making their debuts.

With Lewis (White) and Jack (Simpson) starting the match and Euan Bauld (pictured above) coming on as a substitute, we had lots to pique our interest in the match. Unfortunately, our fourth CBU new boy, Michael Gould, didn’t feature and will have to wait to make his first start.

Breaking into a championship winning team is never easy and it will be extremely tough, not just for Michael and his fellow subs to break into this CBU side, but for everyone in the squad.

The level of competition for jersey’s will be great for Head Coach Deano Morley in terms of pushing his team on to new heights this season as they chase the dream of winning a national championship.

SF USA’s David Binnie commented: “It was a terrific debut for our players and they can all be extremely pleased with the way they almost seamlessly slotted into their new team. I was delighted to see Euan and Lewis get a clean sheet as part of a new back four and the signs are that both will have a big influence on the team both defensively, where Euan excels, and offensively with Lewis’s surging runs forward to support attacks.”

“I was really impressed by Jack’s contribution to the way the game flowed from midfield. He was seeing a lot of the ball during the match and never put a foot wrong.”
